Cycling route 555 in western Latvia forms a 36-kilometre loop between Kandava and Sabile. From Kandava it passes Aizdzire, Kalnmuiža and Pedvāle before reaching Sabile, then returns to Kandava. The ride ties two small towns to the landscape of the Abava Valley.
About 20 kilometres are paved, while the remaining 16 use smaller dirt and country roads. This makes it more varied than a single-surface road ride, with changing conditions and pace. Blue signs marked 555 identify the route, but checking the route map and the day’s conditions before setting out remains sensible.
The appeal of the valley is the freedom to ride without rushing. Viewpoints and nature trails between the towns invite stops, rather than a race to finish the distance. Because the surface changes, choose a bicycle and tyres that feel comfortable on both asphalt and rural lanes.
