An approximately 85-kilometre cycling route links Valmiera and Ainaži, trading the city for fields, forest and eventually the coast. Latvia’s tourism portal suggests Valmiera railway station as one possible starting point; the station is served by the Riga–Valga line. The idea is straightforward: use public transport to reach the start, then explore at your own pace by bicycle.

Part of the ride follows sections of the Green Railway, with its connections marked on the ground. The scenery changes between open fields, woodland and wetland areas, with river crossings along the way; near Ainaži, the route reaches the pier. At Puikule it meets the Limbaži–Rūjiena greenway, while Valmiera connects with the LatEst Velo route. Those junctions make the 85 kilometres useful either as a trip in its own right or as one stage of a longer tour.

Before setting off, choose your direction and a comfortable distance for each day. Country-road surfaces may change with the weather, so tires suited to gravel, water, snacks and a charged phone are sensible companions. The tourism portal identifies May to October as Latvia’s most inviting cycling season; outside it, pay particular attention to daylight and current route conditions. Check train times and bicycle carriage rules before departure.
