Airnimal’s original brief was to create a folding bicycle with the riding qualities of a high-end conventional bike. In this Cambridge-developed approach, rider position and geometry are central to the design. The Chameleon shows how that ambition can be combined with transporting a bicycle.

The Chameleon uses 24-inch wheels with an ISO 520 tyre bead-seat diameter. Designed primarily for road riding, it has a simple rear suspension system. Mudguards and luggage racks can be fitted, although their attachments must be considered when preparing the bicycle for suitcase packing.

Airnimal describes a fold in the bicycle’s longitudinal centre plane. This arrangement is intended to preserve lateral stiffness while allowing vertical movement. Large cartridge bearings support the Chameleon’s pivot. Widely used drivetrain, steering and contact-point components provide more options for adapting the bicycle to its rider.

The folding guides distinguish a quick configuration for storage or a car boot from more involved case packing. For the Chameleon, the stated times are roughly 30–60 seconds and 5–10 minutes respectively. Non-standard equipment can interfere with folding, making a packing rehearsal at home worthwhile.
