A cycling trip in Åland can take two forms: stay in one place for day rides, or move between islands with your luggage. Short distances, cycle paths and coastal scenery make a leisurely pace appealing. Start with the kind of holiday you want: returning to the same bed each evening, or carrying everything onward every morning.
For a shorter outing, Järsö south of Mariehamn offers an approximately 18 km return ride across causeways with sea views. For a longer journey, the historic Postal Route runs 65 km from Eckerö to Hummelvik. Allow time for Kastelholm and Bomarsund along the way; two or three days leave room for an unhurried exploration.
Continuing on archipelago ferries requires a ticket for your bicycle. Plan overnight stops together with crossings and leave a buffer for reaching the harbour. Summer brings a wider choice of services; for a September trip, check ferry timetables, café opening hours and accommodation carefully. A rewarding itinerary here depends as much on time for stops as on the distance covered.
