A ride around Lake Lubāns is a way to explore Latvia's largest lake and the wetland beside it. Madona's visitor information describes Route 33 as a 57 kilometre loop beginning and ending at the Lubāns Wetland Information Centre. It follows water, embankments and fish ponds, so the day is shaped as much by the viewpoints and birdwatching stops as by the distance itself.
The described route takes in the Zvidze and South Embankment birdwatching towers, the Kalnagala sluices and the village of Īdeņa. Gravel makes up most of the surface: the route guide lists 42 kilometres of gravel, 11 of asphalt and four of forest tracks. Some sections can be sandy, which is why the guide recommends a mountain bike or wider tyres. Its estimated riding time is four to six hours; allow longer if you want to stop and look around.
The visitor guide recommends riding from April to October, with summer the preferred season. When planning a trip for the next season, check the route condition, weather and services before setting off. Birds are a defining feature of this wetland, and the observation towers invite a quiet pause while visitors keep to permitted paths. Because the route is circular, it finishes where it starts.
