Norway’s Atlanterhavsvegen, or Atlantic Road, does not need a long mileage to make an impression. The National Scenic Route from Kårvåg to Bud is 36 kilometres long. Its celebrated section crosses small islands and rocky reefs by seven bridges beside the exposed Hustadvika Bay. For a motorcyclist, the sensible plan is to allow much more time than the distance alone suggests.
The view shifts from inhabited coastal land and moorland to bare rock at the water’s edge. Among the route’s stops are Askevågen, Geitøya and Eldhusøya. An elevated circular walkway on Eldhusøya offers a chance to park and experience the shoreline on foot. At the western end, the village of Bud has a waterfront trail leading towards the Ergan Coastal Fort and the open sea.
The exposed setting also shapes the ride: wind and changing weather deserve attention on the bridges. Check current traffic information before setting off and use designated stopping places instead of narrow road shoulders. If the 36-kilometre route is one stage of a longer Norwegian tour, leave room for viewpoints and a walk. Those pauses turn a brief stretch of road into a substantial part of the day.
