Benedict Moqumo, known as Bennie, began cycling in Soweto after receiving a second-hand mountain bike. He later joined a club, moved into road and track cycling, and attended training camps in South Africa. An interest in equipment grew alongside his racing: he learned to work on his own bicycle, while his electrical engineering studies sharpened his attention to mechanisms that operate precisely and reliably.

When the pandemic interrupted his training and racing, Moqumo found another role in the sport. In 2021 he accompanied the South African team to the junior track world championships in Cairo as a mechanic. Working on team bicycles led to further training within the UCI World Cycling Centre network, first in Paarl and later in Aigle, Switzerland. There he handled bicycles from different disciplines and gained experience with racing teams as well.

The central theme of his account is trust rather than any one tool. Moqumo stressed that race bicycles should be ready the day before an event: on race morning, a rider should see a prepared machine, not a hurried repair. This work seldom appears on camera, yet it shapes an athlete’s peace of mind and ability to focus on the ride. From maintaining his own bike to taking responsibility for a team’s equipment, his experience reveals another route through professional cycling.
