Start choosing a child bike seat with the bicycle itself. Rear seats can mount to the frame or luggage rack, but each arrangement has specific requirements. Frame material and tube shape can narrow the choice; Thule excludes carbon frames from its frame-mounted systems.
A rack needs more than a sturdy appearance. Hamax’s carrier-mounted seat instructions require a rack compliant with EN ISO 11243:2016 and rated for at least 27 kg. That figure describes the rack, not the permitted child weight. Check the seat’s own limits, mounting dimensions and the bicycle’s approved load separately.
For a used seat, the model name alone is insufficient. Hamax Caress seats produced from May 2023 have revised mounting parts; the new carrier adapter does not fit earlier seats. The production date and part numbers help identify the correct combination.
Bring the bicycle model, a photograph of the rack markings and the seat manual to the shop. This makes it possible to compare actual components before price or padding becomes the deciding factor. The photograph shows a seat in 2011; its appearance does not establish compatibility for current models.
