Cycling UK’s Big Bike Revival helps adults in England start cycling or return after a break. Local organisations deliver free repair sessions, skills activities and led rides. The programme particularly welcomes people who have not ridden for some time or do not yet feel confident on a bicycle.

At a repair session, a mechanic checks the bicycle and tackles small jobs such as adjusting gears or repairing a puncture. Participants can watch and ask questions. More complex repairs are referred to a workshop; the session cannot replace a full service, but can remove an initial barrier to returning.

Led rides introduce nearby trails, park paths and quiet roads. Before departure, the leader asks about participants’ experience and comfort levels. Routes are short, with opportunities to rest and chat, and the group finishes together. Familiarity with the area and encouragement matter as much as distance.

On 31 March 2026, a further three years of funding were announced for the programme, with eight million pounds from Active Travel England. Longer funding allows local partners to plan activities and retain experienced staff. It creates a basis for support that can continue beyond the first repaired bicycle.
