Bogotá changes the use of its streets on Sundays and public holidays. During Ciclovía, connected road corridors become space for cyclists, walkers and skaters. In April 2026 the programme added 3.22 kilometres, bringing the network to 141.46 kilometres. This is not a single race course, but room to move at different speeds.

The scale matters for more than its distance. Families on bicycles, people out for a walk and skaters can all use the same streets. For part of the day, space usually dominated by traffic takes on another rhythm and becomes a place to meet as well as to travel.

The extension shows that cycling culture can grow through regular use of public space, as well as through new infrastructure. Connected routes give participants choices of distance and pace. Bogotá’s example makes an urban ride feel like transport, recreation and a shared weekly ritual at once.
