On Sardinia’s west coast, the ride from Bosa to Alghero is about 60 kilometres long. Known as the Occidentale Sarda, the road winds between hillsides and the sea. Its appeal lies less in the distance than in the succession of bends and views of the coastal cliffs.

Bosa makes a rewarding starting point for a slow ride: the town sits beside the Temo River, with Malaspina Castle above it. Beyond town, the scenery opens out. Allow time to stop at suitable places along the road so that the view can be enjoyed off the carriageway rather than in the middle of a bend.

Birds of prey, including griffon vultures, can be seen around the cliffs of Capo Marrargiu. It is another reason to treat this stretch as a journey rather than a race. Check current weather and road conditions before setting out, and keep your attention on the road even when the coastal panorama draws the eye.
