At Durham Bike Co-op in North Carolina, a repair is also a chance to learn. The volunteer-run nonprofit workshop gives people access to tools and reused parts while helping them work on their own bicycles.

The co-op accepts donated bikes, restores them and helps put them back into use. Members can work on their own bicycles or rebuild a donated one with a more experienced mechanic. Hands-on skill sharing and community outreach clinics are part of the same effort.

This approach changes the usual relationship between a customer and a repair shop. Riders leave with more than a working bicycle: they gain a better understanding of how it works. Reusing parts and sharing work can also keep a bicycle in service for longer.
