Eileen Sheridan became a professional cyclist for Hercules in 1951 and broke all 21 Women’s Road Records Association records during her career. She completed Land’s End to John o’ Groats in two days, 11 hours and seven minutes.

Her life can also be traced through one bicycle. Before her professional contract she raced a 1950 Mercian, which she later kept.

The bicycle gained dynamo lighting and a four-speed Simplex setup for club rides. That transformation is a reminder that racing equipment can have a long life beyond the results sheet.

Her achievements also inspired Tony Collins’s film Come on Eileen!, a screening of which was advertised by Coventry Transport Museum. Records, film and a surviving bicycle offer different ways into one rider’s story.
