Enviolo offers a bicycle transmission without a sequence of fixed gear steps. The relationship between pedal and wheel rotation can change continuously within a defined range. The manufacturer calls this form of CVT a CVP, or continuously variable planetary transmission.
Inside the hub, rotating balls work between input and output rings. Tilting them changes the transmission ratio, with a specialised oil helping to transfer power. Adjustment takes place within the hub, without moving the chain onto a different rear sprocket.
With manual control, the rider selects the ratio using the grip controller. The automatic system gives that task to electronics: the rider chooses a preferred pedalling cadence, and the system adjusts the ratio towards that rhythm. Depending on the equipment, settings are available through an app, a controller or the e-bike system.
Cadence means pedal revolutions per minute, rather than road speed. Automatic control therefore aims to maintain a pedalling rhythm as riding speed changes. Stepless adjustment still operates within the particular hub’s ratio range; when comparing bicycles, check the actual transmission model and control system.
