The Gaularfjellet scenic route links fjord shores with mountains, lakes and waterfalls along the Gaular watercourse. Stops beside the water can set the rhythm of a motorcycle trip here, rather than mileage alone. The Fossestien trail offers a chance to explore some of the scenery on foot.
One stop is the Utsikten viewing platform, around 700 metres above sea level. It sits at the top of the climb from Vetlefjorden, overlooking the road’s bends and the deep valley. Allow time to take in the surroundings rather than stopping for just one photograph.
The scenic sections Balestrand–Moskog and Sande–Eldalsosen total 114 km. The Mel–Mjell mountain section closes in winter; night-time or bad-weather restrictions can also follow reopening. Check current Statens vegvesen traffic information before setting out.
