Norway’s Geiranger–Trollstigen Scenic Route covers 104 kilometres, but distance is hardly the point of this motorcycle journey. Trollstigen has eleven hairpin bends, while the Ørnesvingen viewpoint looks down towards Geirangerfjord. The Norwegian Scenic Routes authority advises allowing time for stops. On this road, the mountain scenery and viewpoints are part of the ride rather than a distraction from reaching the next town.
The official route runs between Sogge Bru and Langvatnet, climbing from sea level to 1,038 metres. Travellers need a ferry between Eidsdal and Linge, so the sailing schedule belongs in the plan. Gudbrandsjuvet, Flydalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen are among the named places to pause. Trollstigen itself is narrow and winding; mountain weather may matter more to the day’s pace than the modest distance shown on a map.
This is not an all-season route. Several sections close in winter, and temporary restrictions can follow reopening, particularly at night or in poor weather. Check current road alerts and the ferry timetable before setting off. A rider will get more from the route by leaving room for a relaxed pace, safe stops and clothing suited to wind and rain at altitude.
