For the Dutch province of Gelderland, the Para Cycling Track World Championships in Apeldoorn from 29 October to 1 November were about more than four days of racing. A UCI Bike Region since 2017, the province used the event to invite more children into cycling and to show sport across different abilities. The Omnisport velodrome has hosted major international races before; this time the plans also reached well beyond the spectator stands.

The “Toppers Bij Jou Op School” programme was planned for 20 classrooms and around 600 children with and without impairments. Athlete visits combined conversations about training and goals with a practical sports clinic. Pupils were to receive championship tickets and introductions to local sports clubs. A separate pump-track programme aimed to put about 1,500 children on BMX bikes, including pupils from special education schools. The track meeting thus offered a path from watching elite riders to trying a bicycle firsthand.

The wider setting is everyday infrastructure. Cycling accounts for 30 percent of Gelderland journeys of up to 15 kilometres, and the province manages around 1,400 kilometres of cycle paths. It has allocated €50 million to active mobility between 2024 and 2027, with €47 million earmarked for cycling and walking infrastructure. World championship medals draw attention for a few days; linking schools, clubs and usable routes is how that attention can support a lasting habit of riding.
