Göta Kanalleden links Sjötorp and Mem over 220 kilometres. This Swedish national cycling route received the European Cycle Route of the Year award in 2025.
It has seven stages, including 87 kilometres of car-free canal towpath. Red-and-white signs guide riders in both directions. Do not assume the entire route is one continuous separated cycle path.
Locks, cafés and museums invite a slower pace. There is no need to ride all 220 kilometres: a single section can make a trip of its own.
Some lake crossings use boats that carry bicycles. Check departures for your travel date and reserve a place, then plan the day’s ride around the crossing.
