Estonia’s Hiiumaa island can be explored on a 250-kilometre cycling route linking existing roads, paths and rest stops. It begins at Heltermaa harbour, heads toward Kärdla and finishes at the Sarve campsite, about three kilometres from the starting point. A detour to Sõru harbour extends the distance to 275 kilometres. The loop gives riders a way to discover the island over several days rather than seeing only one stretch of coast.

The cycling route shares parts of a 234-kilometre hiking trail but takes a different line in some places. That distinction matters: the entire walking route is not intended for bicycles, and some of the island’s natural areas are sensitive. Signs with a cyclist pictogram mark the cycling route in one direction. Before setting off, riders should check its map, because following hiking markers alone may lead them away from the bicycle route.

In protected areas, cyclists must keep to permitted roads and trails; travel on certain private-road sections is allowed only between sunrise and sunset. A multi-day ride therefore benefits from manageable daily distances and planned rest stops. Hiiumaa shows why a useful cycling route is more than a hiking trail transferred to a bicycle map: it has to work for riders while respecting the landscape it crosses.
