Frame height is only one measurement when choosing a bicycle. For someone with disproportionate dwarfism, handlebar reach, access to the brake levers and crank length can matter just as much. Islabikes developed the Joni range with members of the Dwarf Sports Association UK, addressing those needs in the bicycle’s design rather than leaving every rider to solve them through later adjustments.
Joni uses an exceptionally low step-through frame to make mounting and dismounting easier. Its geometry supports an upright position while allowing efficient pedalling. The brakes have a short reach for smaller hands, and the handlebar and crank dimensions account for different body proportions. Each feature tackles a separate obstacle; together they let the rider control the bicycle without continually compensating for controls that are too far away or too large.
The Joni 20 and Joni 24 were presented in 2022 after members of the sports association took part in their development. Association ambassador Steve Scott contributed his experience to shaping a bicycle for adults. That involvement matters: the needs were defined with people who would actually ride it. The Joni story is a reminder that accessibility is not a single accessory. It comes from the way frame geometry, controls and the experience of the person riding are considered together.
