K.I.S., short for Keep It Stable, was invented by Jo Klieber at Syntace. Canyon introduced the steering-centering system on the Spectral CF 8 in 2022. Its operating principle is a spring-generated restoring force, rather than friction that simply resists steering movement.
Pretensioned springs and strong bands connect the mechanism inside the frame to a shaped cam ring on the fork steerer. Turning the bars produces a counterforce that helps bring them back to centre. The ring’s shape determines how that force develops as the steering moves.
The centering force can be tailored to riding style, with stronger support for stability or lighter support for greater agility. Follow the specific bike’s manual when adjusting it: the retaining bolt must not be removed completely, as the mechanism could come apart.
The intended benefits include reducing front-wheel deflection over rough ground and wheel flop on slow climbs. In 2023, K.I.S. also appeared on a Spectral with different front and rear wheel sizes. It illustrates how adding a mechanism to the steering can change a bike’s handling.
