The International Cargo Bike Festival, held in Utrecht on 12 and 13 October, brought together industry professionals from 36 countries. The two-day programme included a range of transport designs and a riding area, but discussion increasingly focused on how cargo bikes can work in regular daily service. Organisers reported around 600 visits.
Standardised battery systems, more durable components, fleet management and workforce training were among the main subjects. Alongside larger commercial vehicles, participants also considered the value of compact cargo bikes on crowded city streets. That points to a practical trade-off for the industry: greater capacity moves more goods, while manoeuvrability and parking shape how easy a vehicle is to use every day.
The event also saw the launch of a Dutch cycle logistics association. Next year, the festival will move to Nijmegen, the city where it began in 2012. Together, these steps show a discussion expanding beyond individual models towards shared infrastructure and a more organised voice for the sector.
