La Vélomaritime is the French section of EuroVelo 4: roughly 1,500 km between Roscoff in Brittany and Bray-Dunes in the north. It connects Channel and North Sea landscapes, including the Pink Granite Coast, Mont-Saint-Michel Bay and the Bay of Somme. There is no need to ride it all at once: the official guide divides it into 53 stages.

Being close to the sea does not mean following a flat cycle path. Around 62% of the route uses shared roads with light traffic, and several areas involve substantial climbing. Daily plans therefore need to account for the stage’s elevation profile and road type as well as its distance.

For a gentler introduction, consider the 22 km Mont-Saint-Michel–Ducey-Les Chéris stage. Officially graded for beginners and families, it has around 80% cycle infrastructure. The route passes salt meadows and the Sélune estuary on its way to Ducey. Some shared-road sections remain.

Rail access can shape a shorter trip: gateways include Saint-Malo, Pontorson and Cherbourg. Before buying tickets, check bicycle carriage and reservation conditions for the specific train and travel date. The route website also provides a train-and-bike journey planner.
