The approximately 22-kilometre route 589 is waymarked from Liepāja towards Nīca. Much of it follows embankments beside Lake Liepāja and the Bārta and Tosele rivers. The terrain is flat, but gravel, sand and potholes demand attention.
Lake Liepāja formed as the Baltic Sea retreated. The lake and adjoining meadows belong to a Natura 2000 area important for breeding and migrating waterbirds. That landscape gives the ride its own rhythm: pause to watch the reeds and water while leaving birds undisturbed. It is a reason to plan beyond average speed and distance alone.
The official difficulty rating is moderate, and the route is unsuitable for small children. Save the map before setting off and check weather and surface conditions. Arrange the return journey separately rather than improvising at the finish. Carry water and a snack, and allow spare time for stops: a leisurely pace leaves more room to notice the landscape.
