Lysevegen begins at Lysebotn, at the end of Lysefjord, and climbs towards Sirdal. Its first section twists through 27 hairpin bends, with a total elevation change of more than 900 metres. For a motorcyclist, the route moves quickly from the edge of the fjord to austere mountain scenery.

Beyond the bends, the road crosses a rocky plateau for about 25 kilometres before descending towards the Sirdal valley. The Øygardstøl viewpoint near the top of the climb offers a designated place to stop and look back over the valley. The scenery deserves time; the bends do not call for speed.

The road is narrow, so allow space for oncoming vehicles and use passing places to let traffic through. Stop for photographs only where parking is permitted. Lysevegen closes for winter, and snow and road conditions determine its opening and closing dates; check its current status before travelling.
