In Austria’s Carinthia region, the Malta Hochalmstraße climbs 14.4 kilometres to the Kölnbrein Dam. The route through the Malta Valley combines rock tunnels, sharp bends and views of waterfalls. For a rider, the ascent matters more than the distance on the odometer.
The road ends at the Kölnbrein Dam and its reservoir. Austria’s highest dam makes a natural stopping point: park the motorcycle and take in the high mountain scenery on foot. Traffic lights control the narrowest sections, so leave time for a relaxed ascent.
In November, the road is outside its usual operating season. Plan the ride for warmer months: the operator generally opens access from May to late October, although weather and avalanche conditions can change those dates. Check the current opening times before setting off.
