The Cēsis region’s “Mērnieku laiki” cycling route makes a roughly 100-kilometre loop through Piebalga. It follows gravel roads, former railway corridors and forest trails. Riders can join the loop at any point; the tourism office rates it moderate and suggests allowing three to four days.
The ride also passes through the landscape of the Kaudzīte brothers’ novel. Stops include the writers’ family home, Kalna Kaibēni, as well as local museums and farms. Observation towers on Brežģi Hill and Viņķi Hill offer views over Piebalga before the route returns to its fields and woods.
The route’s digital map also marks cafés, accommodation and bicycle rental. That makes it useful for dividing the distance into manageable days and planning stops around the literary sites. Before setting out, check the weather and expect surfaces to vary, especially on gravel and forest sections.
