Mobile data is not always available on mountain roads or in sparsely populated areas. Google Maps lets riders save an area on a phone before travelling and use it without a connection. For a motorcycle trip, the saved area needs to cover the whole intended road and possible alternatives, not just the destination.
Driving directions can continue when the connection drops, provided the entire route lies within the downloaded area. Live traffic information and alternative routes are unavailable offline, however. A saved map therefore does not replace checking whether a road is open and suitable for the planned ride.
Before departure, open the saved area and make sure it is still current; offline maps need periodic updates. Downloads may also be unavailable in some countries or regions. A digital map is a useful companion, but deciding where to stop and when to reconsider the route remains the rider’s responsibility.
