After a motorcycle crash, quickly communicating the location can matter as much as making the call itself. BMW Motorrad’s Intelligent Emergency Call combines automatic crash detection with a manual way to request help. It is equipment on specific motorcycles, rather than a standard feature of every bike.

In a serious fall or collision, sensors can trigger an immediate call to BMW’s emergency centre. The centre receives location and direction-of-travel information and attempts to speak with the rider. For a less severe incident, the system allows time to cancel before the call is sent. It is designed to avoid an automatic alert when a parked motorcycle tips over or the bike hits a pothole.

A rider can also press the button on the right handlebar while the motorcycle is stationary with the ignition on. A built-in microphone and speaker provide a voice link without a helmet communication device. The system needs a working mobile network, so a connection cannot be assumed where there is no coverage. Riders should check their own motorcycle’s equipment and owner’s manual before relying on the feature.
