Chain seals help retain grease inside the joints. Choose cleaner and lubricant suited to the fitted seal type. Clean gently with a soft cloth and let the chain dry completely before lubricating. Avoid wire brushes and aggressive solvents.
Work with the engine switched off and the motorcycle securely supported. Move the wheel by hand only; never use engine power to turn the chain. Keep lubricant off tyres and brakes. Allow the settling time specified by the lubricant manufacturer before riding.
Find the required chain slack and measurement conditions in your motorcycle handbook. Excessively tight or loose chains can damage the drive system. One universal millimetre figure cannot suit every model.
Inspect the chain after wet rides as well as at scheduled intervals. Stiff links or damaged seals need a wear assessment, not simply more lubricant. Replace the chain and sprockets when necessary.
