Tread is not the only part of a motorcycle tire worth checking before a ride. Look over the surface and sidewalls: cuts, cracks, bulges and unusual worn patches call for closer inspection. Wear concentrated on one side or a flat spot can also point to a problem with the wheel or motorcycle.

After hitting a pothole, damage inside the tire may not show on the surface. The manufacturer’s maintenance guidance recommends a professional inspection, with the tire removed if needed. A bulge or exposed casing is not something to ride on merely because the tire still holds air.

Check the rim as well: cracks and distortion are more than cosmetic faults. Built-in tread wear indicators help reveal wear, but requirements for the particular tire and place of use still need separate attention. If the nature of damage is unclear, have a qualified tire specialist assess it before the next ride.
