Winter storage starts before a cover goes on the motorcycle. Washing and thoroughly drying the bike keeps road grime from sitting against paint and metal for months. The storage space should be dry and ventilated; a breathable cover helps limit trapped moisture.

The battery needs its own plan. During a long lay-up, use a maintenance charger compatible with the battery type rather than briefly starting the engine in the garage every week. If the battery is to be removed, consult the motorcycle manual and the battery maker’s instructions for the correct procedure.

Check the condition and pressure of the tyres before parking. Staying in one position for months can create a flat spot; a centre stand or periodically moving the motorcycle changes the loaded area. Check the tyres and operating fluids again before the first spring ride. Preparation for storage does not replace a pre-ride inspection.
