It is tempting to judge riding gear by appearance, yet the useful question is how it behaves on the motorcycle. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service recommends a jacket and trousers made specifically for riding, with a comfortable, secure fit. When trying them on, take your normal riding position. Elbow and knee protection should stay where it belongs, while sleeves and trouser legs should still cover you with your hands on the bars and feet on the pegs.

The protection class on a garment label is a useful starting point for comparison, but it is not the whole purchase decision. The service advises riders to seek the greatest protection they can afford and identifies AAA as the highest class it discusses. Check the position of the individual protectors, the feel of seams and closures, and whether jacket and trousers leave gaps at the lower back or ankles when worn together.

A well-chosen outfit also helps a rider stay comfortable and attentive on a longer journey. Ventilation matters in heat, weather protection in rain, and reflective details can improve visibility. Gloves must allow a secure grip and clear feel at the controls; boots should protect the feet without making the pedals awkward to use. Try the complete outfit together before deciding, rather than judging each piece in isolation.
