From 24 November 1999 to 3 September 2000, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presented The Art of the Motorcycle. Selection considered aesthetics, technological innovation, design quality and social impact, taking the discussion well beyond engine power.
New York’s MoMA also has a motorcycle in its Architecture and Design collection: the 1949 Vincent-HRD Series C Black Shadow by Philip Vincent and Phil Irving. Its materials include painted and chromium-plated metal, polished aluminium, rubber and leather.
These examples suggest a simple way of looking: start with the silhouette, then examine joints and surfaces. How does the tank continue the seat line? Which components remain exposed? Even a familiar motorcycle can become a conversation about proportions and materials.
