The Moulton story began with the F-frame launched in 1962. A more fundamental change followed with the AM bicycle in 1983 and its three-dimensional lattice frame. The distinctive silhouette was part of an engineering solution.
Modern Moulton designs combine 17- or 20-inch wheels, front and rear suspension, and a steel frame. Small wheels do not demand faster pedalling: the gearing is chosen to maintain a familiar cadence.

The example encourages us to assess bicycle design as a whole. Wheel diameter alone cannot explain the ride; the frame, suspension and gearing matter too. Moulton’s unusual proportions become easier to understand when those parts are considered together.
