The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile, roughly 830-kilometre route starting and finishing in Inverness. It crosses Scotland’s northern Highlands, linking coastal villages, mountain scenery and beaches.
A motorcycle trip benefits from days without a long transfer. Staying several nights in one area leaves more time to explore it. Plan accommodation and meals ahead; outside the main season, some services may be unavailable.
On narrow single-track sections carrying traffic in both directions, passing places let vehicles meet and allow faster traffic through. They are not parking spaces. For a photograph, use permitted parking and keep the road and access points clear.
An October visit needs particularly careful checks of opening hours: the route’s motorcycle guide uses the March–September season. Check weather and road conditions before each stage. Fog, rain and animals on the road can change the day’s pace; distance covered is only one measure of a worthwhile tour.
