On Norway’s Romsdal and Nordmøre coast, a bicycle tour can also be an island journey. The route of about 300 kilometres begins in Molde, crosses Midsund, Aukra, Ona and Finnøya, returns to the mainland near Bud and follows the Atlantic Road towards Kristiansund. Ferries set the rhythm between the islands: stretches of riding are broken by short crossings that reveal the coast from the water.

Some sections pass over low islands at the ocean’s edge, with high mainland mountains visible in the distance. Traffic is light on many stretches, and there is room to visit fishing villages or take longer detours. This is not one continuous signed cycleway, however. The route has no waymarking, so each day’s stage, overnight stop and ferry connection needs planning in advance. The roughly 300-kilometre journey is intended to be ridden over several days with accommodation along the way.

The most important transport detail comes near Kristiansund. From Averøy, the described trip includes a bus transfer through the Atlanterhavsveien tunnel rather than cycling the entire way. Before departure, check current ferry and bus timetables and whether the bicycle can travel with you. That leaves more freedom to enjoy the Atlantic Road scenery without a rushed finish or an awkward surprise on the final stage.
