Belgium’s Op Wielekes initiative lends children’s bicycles for an annual membership fee. Families can exchange an outgrown bike for a larger one. Returned bicycles are refurbished before being lent again.

A lending depot needs more than mechanics. Volunteers welcome families, manage tools and parts, oversee budgets and keep track of borrowed bicycles. Other responsibilities cover communication, team support and partnerships. Dividing the work this way also creates opportunities for people without repair skills.

Arteveldehogeschool’s research into the project also highlights barriers to participation. Unclear costs, complicated administration and language difficulties can discourage families. Personal referrals through schools and welfare organizations, alongside simple multilingual communication, are identified as promising ways to reach more households.

The model’s value extends beyond keeping bicycles in circulation. For borrowing to become a habit, a family needs clear arrangements, an approachable team and trust.
