Izola makes a useful base for exploring the Parenzana in stages. Towards Koper, D6 follows the seafront; towards Portorož, the route passes through the green Strunjan area and former railway tunnels. The Škofije–Portorož section is paved, but that does not describe the entire Parenzana, which also includes gravel and woodland paths.
The 550-metre Valeta Tunnel connects Strunjan and Portorož. Built in 1900–1902, it was renovated in 2000 with asphalt and lighting. Cyclists now share it with walkers, so keep an easy pace and leave others plenty of room.
Add a visit to Izolana — House of the Sea in Izola for its railway exhibition. Choose a specific section and check the current route map before setting off: a short coastal outing and a longer ride into inland Istria call for different plans.
