The cancellation of the Urban Cycling World Championships in Riyadh removes more than one event from the calendar. Eleven world titles in trials and BMX Freestyle Park and Flatland were due to be awarded from 3 to 7 November. With the championships no longer taking place, those 2026 titles will not be contested.
The consequences are especially significant for BMX Freestyle Park riders. Riyadh was intended to provide their first opportunity to earn qualification points for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The international federation is discussing a revised route with the International Olympic Committee and says it will communicate the details in November. The qualification pathway is still expected to conclude with a three-event Olympic Q-Series in May and June 2028.
The status of existing champions also has an unusual extension. Under the federation’s rules, the 2025 world champions retain their titles and may wear the rainbow jersey in their discipline, speciality and category until the day before the 2027 championships begin. A rider who changes category or speciality cannot wear that jersey in the new one. For athletes and teams, the next practical question is where the lost qualification opportunity will be restored.
