On Lake Peipus’s western shore, Estonia’s Onion Route, or Sibulatee, links villages with longstanding Old Believer traditions. Build a motorcycle day around a few substantial stops: a museum, tea and a walk, leaving room to explore between rides.
One option is to begin in Mustvee and continue to Kolkja. Its Old Believers Museum displays photographs, handicrafts, clothing and household objects. Continue through Kasepää to Varnja, passing villages with wooden houses lining the road. Varnja’s Samovar House introduces the local tea culture.
Pictured is Mustvee harbour in 2007. Add a detour to Alatskivi Castle and its park if time allows.
Check museum and dining hours before departure; some visits require advance booking. Allow time for autumn rain and walking stops. Use a current map to choose roads between stops, considering their surfaces and your motorcycle.
