Choosing a suitable cycle does not always begin in a shop. Someone who needs more stability or a different riding position may first need a safe place to try several options. Cycling UK’s Inclusive Cycling Experience offers that opportunity at centres in Greater Manchester and Inverness.
The programme provides access to adapted cycles, staff support and cycle loans. A tricycle, tandem or handcycle may suit different needs; the point is to find what works for a particular rider rather than assume one design fits everyone. From April 2024 to January 2026, the centres recorded 4,879 participant engagements.
The programme also shows why a single trial ride may not be enough. Guidance, accessible places to ride and the chance to borrow a cycle help people judge whether it works for everyday journeys as well as a supervised session. That makes cycling a more practical transport option for people who cannot comfortably use a conventional two-wheeled bicycle.
