A reusable foam air filter can be cleaned and used again. For a filter designed to be oiled, however, a clean appearance does not mean it is ready to ride: the tacky film of dedicated filter oil helps capture fine dust. First identify the filter fitted to the motorcycle and check its manufacturer’s care instructions.

Clean the foam with a suitable cleaner, rinse it and let it dry completely. Squeeze gently; do not wring it. Then work suitable filter oil in evenly and follow the oil’s drying instructions. Clean the housing before installation and check that the filter fits correctly.

Plan this job ahead of a ride, leaving time for drying. Follow the motorcycle and filter instructions when choosing cleaning intervals and products. This sequence applies to foam filters designed to be oiled; it should not automatically be extended to other filter designs.
