Portugal recorded 5,192 new motorcycle registrations in September, 17.6% more than in the same month a year earlier. From January through September, registrations reached 41,882, a rise of 17.9%. Those figures point to a growing market overall, but the breakdown shows that its segments did not move at the same pace.

Motorcycles with engines up to 125 cc accounted for 2,628 September registrations, up 31.3%. Larger-engine motorcycles recorded 2,505 registrations and growth of 5.2%. The smaller-engine class was therefore slightly larger for the month and expanded much faster. Over the first nine months of the year, the totals were closer together: 20,398 for motorcycles up to 125 cc and 20,828 for those above 125 cc.

Electric motorcycle registrations rose 73.5% in September, but that increase represented just 59 vehicles. A sharp percentage change from such a small base should not be confused with a large market share. Registration figures show the pace of change; they do not, on their own, establish buyers’ motives or predict the next month. The clearest finding is narrower: motorcycles up to 125 cc contributed most of the market’s September growth.
