Richard Sachs travelled to England in 1972 and spent about ten months at Witcomb Light Cycles. After working at Witcomb USA, he founded Richard Sachs Cycles in 1975. An introduction to the trade became a sustained commitment to building bicycle frames.

His approach centres on steel road-racing frames: geometry, accurate assembly, brazing and hand finishing. Lugs connect the tubes, while the complete construction process shapes the finished bicycle. Experience in racing complements the metalworking skills behind that approach.

Sachs’s influence also reaches beyond his own bicycles. He began designing lugs with Takahashi in 1981. Later, working with Dario Pegoretti and Columbus, he helped develop the steel tubeset that became known as PegoRichie, intended for builders using lugged construction.

This created a dual role as framebuilder and materials supplier to fellow craftspeople. His story shows how experience at an individual workbench can support a wider community, through both complete bicycles and the components from which others build.
