Lithuania Travel’s western loop is a 203 kilometre cycling route that begins and ends in Klaipėda. It follows the coast through Palanga and Šventoji, turns inland through Žemaitija, circles Lake Plateliai and returns via Kretinga. The route offers a gradual change of scenery from the Baltic shore to lakes, forests and smaller towns.
The first section, roughly 40 kilometres from Klaipėda to Šventoji, uses mostly good cycle paths and some forest trails. A 24 kilometre circuit around Lake Plateliai is described as flatter and suitable for families. These sections also make the route useful for a shorter day ride: there is no need to cover the full 203 kilometre loop in one trip.
The more demanding stretch lies between Šventoji and Plateliai, where parts of the 53 kilometre section use narrow roads with heavy traffic. The 80 kilometre return via Kretinga is also better suited to experienced riders. Before setting out, it makes sense to review the route map, surfaces and traffic conditions, choose sections that fit your pace and plan the stops.
