After removing a wheel for transport or a tyre repair, check that the hub is fully seated in the frame or fork. While the wheel is out, avoid squeezing a hydraulic disc brake lever: the pads can close together. Reconnect any rim-brake release mechanism opened for removal.
Identify your attachment system. Quick releases, thru-axles and axle nuts require different procedures. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific system; use the specified torque for a thru-axle. A lever alone does not tell you how the mechanism works. The attachment must be fully secured and must not interfere with other components.
Lift the bike and spin the wheel. Check alignment and look for brake rub. Standing beside the bike, apply each brake while trying to roll it forward. The brake should hold the wheel, without the lever touching the handlebar. Free rotation alone does not confirm that the wheel is securely attached.
Also check for sideways play by gently rocking the secured wheel. Resolve insecure attachment, ineffective braking or persistent play before riding. If you are unsure how the system operates or whether it is correctly assembled, ask a bicycle mechanic to demonstrate it before your next ride.
