The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 offers 14 gears with uniform 13.6% steps and a total range of 526%. In the highest gear, one pedal revolution therefore covers approximately 5.26 times the distance of the lowest gear. The even progression makes the size of the next change predictable.
The mechanical version uses one twist shifter and can change gear while stationary. This lets you select an easier gear after stopping, ready to set off again. Ease pedal pressure while shifting: higher loads increase resistance inside the mechanism. A single movement of the shifter can also move through several gears.
The internal mechanism runs in an oil bath that helps protect it from dust and moisture. Care still matters: follow the oil-change instructions and look after the external drivetrain. Before choosing the system, consider how its gearing feels on a ride, frame compatibility and access to servicing.
