When planning your next Norwegian motorcycle tour, leave time for stops along the Rondane scenic route. The official 75 km itinerary includes road 27 between Venabygdsfjellet and Folldal and the road 219 section between Enden and Sollia Church. It runs alongside Rondane National Park, linking high mountain scenery with inhabited valleys.
At Lake Atnsjøen, the Sohlbergplassen viewing platform curves between pine trees, framing the mountains from almost the same perspective as Harald Sohlberg’s painting of a winter night in Rondane. Farther north, Strømbu offers a roof terrace and lounge beside the Atna river. Architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk designed both stops; Strømbu is also a starting point for hikes.
At the northern end, the Folldal mining complex offers a glimpse of the area’s industrial past. The photograph shows the Folldal valley in November 2010. Although the scenic route is normally open year-round, its connection to the E6 over Ringebufjellet can close briefly in bad winter weather. Choose motorcycle travel dates around actual weather and road conditions, and check current traffic notices before setting off.
