The Route des Crêtes connects Cassis and La Ciotat on France’s Mediterranean coast. At nearly 13 kilometres, the entirely surfaced road makes a short section of a longer motorcycle outing, best planned with time for stops. Its appeal lies in the sea and coastal cliffs rather than the chance to cover distance quickly.

Roadside viewpoints overlook La Ciotat Bay, the old town and Île Verte. On a very clear day, the islands off Marseille may also be visible. Choose a stopping place early and take photographs from a pull-off rather than stopping in the traffic lane.

The choice of day matters: every Sunday throughout the year, the road is closed to motorised vehicles, including motorcycles. It is reserved for walkers and cyclists. Planning for another day does not guarantee access either: check the current road status and the date of the notice before setting out.

Wind conditions can lead to additional closures. Leave room for an alternative day plan and follow signs on the ground. If the coastal section is unavailable for riding, a stop in Cassis or La Ciotat can be planned separately without making the entire outing depend on crossing this road.
